Bullers of Buchan

Last Saturday, Melnie and Angus went to look at some rocky cliffs that are about 25 miles north of Aberdeen. The area is called Bullers of Buchan. It was originally a small fishing village. Because of the cliffs, the fisherman would have to haul their catch along with any equipment up the cliffs each night. As you can imagine, the village decreased over time without a good harbor. Today, the cliffs are utilized by the seabirds that use them for nesting. It has become a protected area as a bird santuary.

The drive north of Aberdeen is characterized by being relatively flat compared to most of the northeast and the Highlands.

This is a country church built for the small villages and farms in the area.

Some interesting information about the Bullers of Buchan.

This cove is where the fisherman beached their boats. It sits directly below where the village lies. The cliffs here are not as steep as the surrounding cliffs. It was about a 200 feet climb to the house every night after a day of fishing (hauling whatever was caught that day).

The vertical cliffs of Bullers of Buchan with numerous seabirds nesting on the outcroppings.

Melnie wondering how close she should get to the edge for a better look. BE CAREFUL!!!

This picture shows several fingers sticking out into the North Sea. Each finger has sheer vertical cliffs. The area is beautifully rugged with its dramatic drops.

A nesting area. Blow this picture up to look at the young chicks behind the adults.

An arch into a big hole in the cliffs. This feature is known as "The Pot". It was probably once a large sea cave with its roof now lying in the sea.

The coastline.

One of the numerous rocky islands along this part of the beach.

A narrow jagged inlet.

One of the larger inlets from the sea.
